Get Involved

Thank you for your interest in the Build It community-engagement initiative. There are many opportunities for you to get involved during the 2008-2009 academic year.

ACTION GROUP

The Action Group is the student leadership team within the Build It initiative. Action Group members are selected each fall through a competitive application process. Students in the Action Group learn about social issues in the community, volunteer weekly at one of the partner sites, organize and publicize Build It activities, and develop valuable skills in the process. They also work closely with the Advisory Group (comprising representatives from the University's faculty and staff and from partner organizations) and serve as ambassadors for the University in the Greater Richmond community.

*** Applications for the Build It Action Group are due at noon on Monday, September 1. ***

CORE VOLUNTEERS

Build It core volunteers work on a weekly basis with partner schools and nonprofit organizations in Northside Richmond neighborhoods. This experience offers participants the opportunity to:

  • form relationships in the community
  • learn firsthand about social issues
  • develop practical skills through "real-world" experience
  • create positive change

More detailed information about the specific Build It partner sites and their volunteer needs can be found here.

***Registration forms for Build It core volunteers are due no later than 5 p.m., Friday, January 23. ***

However, all volunteers are encouraged to submit their registration forms as soon as possible. Returning volunteers may start volunteering the week of January 19-23, and new Build It recruits should start volunteering the week of January 26-30.
